A "more perfect union?" YES WE CAN!

Many years ago, Paul wrote a letter of encouragement to one of his protégés, Timothy in which, among other things, he shared a universal truth: "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a SOUND MIND." When living from our deep-most and authentic selves, connected to our Creator, we are powerful, we are loving and we are fearless; in other words, we possess soundness of mind.

This assertion is like a lightening rod in 2008 when our overwhelmingly "godly" country is at a critical cross-roads without a functioning compass. Fearfulness and propaganda-guzzling seem a more accurate description of our nation's current state of mind, and as we have seen, one assured to keep us mired in the mud of our separate worlds.

I believe this concept of "soundmindedness" could serve as useful standard to guide and undergird our moving towards one another to heal the many deep wounds of our country. How is the experience and exercise of power impacted by connection to our Creator? When we truly love one another, what happens to fear, distrust and suspicion? Would disciplining our mind and sharpening our critical thinking skills help us better understand one another? What is a disciplined mind?

Our individual and collective answers to these questions, I believe, could go a long ways toward navigating the waters toward a more unified country. What do you think?
